Snooze

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

There hasn’t been too many good tracks on Hype Machine these past couple days… So more Korean music. Shout out to 陳綺萍 for this awesome track. It has a real 80’s new wave feel with the drum loop and synth. Introduce me to good music and you’re a friend forever.

I don’t know why I hate this song. I also don’t know why I find myself listening to it all day. I don’t even listen to Big Bang, either. Apparently 2NE1 is some hot new Korean girl group. All I can say is lolly lolly lollipop oh lolly pop pop.

Unexpected epiphanies

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

A water main on my street had broken over the weekend. At first, it was the house on the end that had water leaking out of their lawn. A couple days later, water was coming out of our lawn. The irony of the situation is my mom does water piping plans for the City of Houston, though she does new developments and not maintenance. We made a call to 311. They sent a crew on Wednesday to fix the main.

On Wednesday I had a busy day planned with friends, so I got up around 10 to go shower. I was walking to my bathroom holding my towel and a fresh change of clothes when my dad told me they shut off the water for a couple hours. Shit.

Well, luckily, that morning I had been terribly thirsty so I had put some filtered water in an old grapefruit juice bottle and brought it to my room to drink. So with a half bottle of water, I brushed my teeth, washed my face, and rinsed my hair. I even managed to style it a little bit and have water left over. I thought to myself, wow if I could do all this on a half bottle of water, I wonder how much water I can save a day by doing this. I mean, with running water plentiful in developed countries like ours, everyone really takes it for granted. I kind of let the water run when I’m rinsing my toothbrush or washing my face. It’s little things like this that make me think. Maybe we can prevent global climate change, but it will probably take a major social or environmental change.

Oh and I had to pee really bad, and I held it til we got to the Target at Memorial City mall… Seriously, running water is one of the greatest assets ever.

When Jay Chou’s “Still Fantasy” 依然范特西 came out with the single “Far Away” 千里之外, I thought it was one of the best Chinese songs ever. Thing is, it wasn’t because of Jay Chou’s singing. So here is 費玉清’s solo version. Much better fitting, in my opinion.

I found more Korean music. Special thanks to Chen Yi-ping.

New adventures

Monday, July 13th, 2009

So I had a conversation with fellow music head Kien. He wanted to know if I listened to any kpop at all. I didn’t, so we agreed he would listen to some Hyori, and I would get some BoA.

Couple days later we both agreed that the new BoA album was too generic. I played BoA’s 2003 album “Valenti”, but didn’t really appeal to me. Hyori’s “It’s Hyorish” was a keeper, however. To quote him, “The album goes through a bunch of tone shifts from pop to jazz, which was executed perfectly.” Couldn’t agree more. Only downside is I don’t understand Korean at all, but I know good music when I hear it.

If you listen to Korean pop at all, I’d love some pointers. I’m always trying to expand my musical tastes.

The Saltwater Room

Time together is just never quite enough.
When we’re apart whatever are you thinking of?
What will it take to make or break this hint of love?
So tell me darling do you wish we’d fall in love

Summertime

Friday, July 10th, 2009

You’re in my mind, you’re in my heart

Just poking in to update y’all with some jams. Summer has been pretty uneventful so far. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, it’s better than doing homework and studying. Summer is almost half over, and I do miss the college life a bit. Just not the homework and studying.

Jolin is really into covers and sampling other artists’ music. I like it, however. Here is one of her earlier covers. It’s really catchy, much better than the original.
